Jo Ann graduated from Salem High School in 1954 and from Salem College in 1958 with a Bachelor’s degree and double major in home economics and elementary education. On June 29, 1959, she married Robert Lee Samples, who preceded her in death on September 24, 1991. Jo Ann went on to become an elementary teacher for thirty-six years. Jo Ann was a strict teacher, yet at the same time kind and loving. She retired from the Harrison County Board of Education in 1996. Jo Ann was a member of the Eastern Star and Delta Kappa Gamma.
Jo Ann was a devoted mother and is survived by her two children, James Robert’ Bobby” Samples and wife, Dianna and Dr. Evangeline Yvonne “Eve” Samples; two grandchildren, Isaac Walden Samples and Emilee Dianna Samples; one brother, Clarence Wilson “Wille” Mutschelknaus and wife, Mary. She is survived by several cousins, nieces, and nephews.
She was preceded in death by a nephew, Clarence “Bill” Mutschelknaus Jr.
Jo Ann was Methodist by faith. In her spare time, Jo Ann enjoyed farming and gardening and raised sheep and cattle.
The family would like to thank Salem Genesis Center for the care and dedication that was given to our mother.
A private graveside service will take place on Tuesday, January 26, 2021 at K of P Cemetery with Pastor Michael Atkinson officiating. A public memorial service will be held a later date.
