John Thomas "Tom" Adams was born in February of 1868 in Kentucky, the eldest of three children born to first cousins, once removed, William Francis Adams and Rebecca E. Ralston. He was commonly known by his middle name, Thomas.

About 1903 in Kentucky, Thomas married Katherine "Kate or Katie" Laughlin. The couple farmed. No children are known to have been born to their union. In 1910 the couple was living with Thomas's parents. The couple was enumerated on the farm of Kate's younger sister in the 1940 census of District 6 of Harrison County, Kentucky:

Thomas, 75, died December 19, 1943 near Connersville, Harrison County, Kentucky. His death certificate states that he was buried in the "Family Burial Gr." on December 21, 1943. The burial grounds is now referred to as the Ralston Farmily Cemetery. His tombstone is marked only as "Tom."
