President of Nicaragua, Head of State of El Salvador. A graduate of the University of San Carlos in Guatemala, Ramírez practiced law and was a distinguished political leader throughout Central America. Following the forced resignation of Antonio José Cañas in 1840, he was appointed Head of State of El Salvador during its period in the Federal Republic of Central America, an office he held until 1841. Returning to Nicaragua, he was named Supreme Director of Nicaragua (forerunner to the office of President) serving from 1849 until 1851. He later joined the government of Nicaraguan President Patricio Rivas and filibuster William Walker, serving there briefly until his sudden death. He is the grandfather of El Salvador Presidents Jorge Meléndez Ramírez and Carlos Meléndez Ramírez.
