President of Nicaragua. Born on the Solentiname Islands in Lake Nicaragua, Núñez studied medicine in Chile before returning to Nicaragua to practice and teach medicine in León. In 1834 he was appointed Head of State of Nicaragua during its period as part of the Federal Republic of Central America, an office he held until 1835 when he assumed the office of Deputy Head of State under José Zepeda. Following Zepeda’s assassination in 1837, he was reappointed Head of State until January 1838, and again from March to November 1838. After Nicaragua achieved its independence from the Federal Republic of Central America, Núñez became the first Supreme Director (the forerunner to the office of President) serving from November 1838 until 1839.
