President of Nicaragua. A distinguished lawyer educated at the University of León, Madriz served as Minister of Foreign Affairs in the cabinet of President José Santos Zelaya. In 1907 he was appointed chief of the Nicaraguan delegation at the Central American Peace Conference in Washington DC. That same year he was also appointed Nicaragua’s magistrate on the Central American Court of Justice, serving until 1909. In 1909 he was appointed President of Nicaragua after Zelaya was forced to resign due to a rebellion. Unable to establish a secure government as the country devolved into civil war or to receive American recognition, he too was forced to resign in 1910. He died in exile of Bright’s disease a year later. Originally buried in Mexico, his remains were repatriated to Nicaragua in 1965.
