President of Nicaragua. After serving as a member of the Nicaraguan Senate, Rivas was appointed to serve as acting Supreme Director of Nicaragua (forerunner to the office of President) from June until July 1839, and again from 1840 until 1841. Following the arrival of filibuster William Walker to Nicaragua, he was appointed in 1855 as the puppet President of Nicaragua. He served as such until Walker’s defeat in 1857, and the appointment of Tomás Martinez and Máximo Jerez Tellería as co-presidents. Rivas himself turned on Walker during the filibuster wars and declared him a traitor.
