Military Officer, President of Honduras. A veteran of the many civil wars that plagued Central America following its independence from Spain, Xatruch quickly gained political and military prominence throughout the region. In 1857 he was named General-in-Chief of the Allied Armies of Central America to combat the threat of filibuster and self-declared President of Nicaragua William Walker, although he soon after passed leadership to José Joaquín Mora Porrás and assumed the role of Inspector General. Returning to Honduras after the defeat of Walker, he was appointed Minister of War and Commerce under President José Santos Guardiola from 1858 until 1860, and in 1864 he briefly served as Vice President of Honduras under President José María Medina. On March 26, 1871, Xatruch overthrew Medina and proclaimed himself President of Honduras, serving only until May when Medina retook power and forced him into exile to Nicaragua. He continued to serve in a variety of political and high ranking military positions in Nicaragua and is recognized there as a national hero.
