EX-CHIEF SUCCUMBS AFTER LONG ILLNESS

Frederick Gerster
, ex-chief of the Galena Volunteer Department and a well known mine operator, died at midnight Wednesday in his home on South Missouri Avenue at the State Line where he was at present engaged in the dairy business, after an illness of four years duration, although he had been confined to his home only recently.

Mr. Gerster was 54 years of age having been born Cleveland, Ohio December 3, 1865, coming with his father to Galena in 1880 where he has since resided.

Soon after his arrival here he became interested in mining and later formed a partnership with the late Colonel W.B. Stone, forming the Gerster-Stone Mining and Milling Co.

Mr. Gerster was appointed Chief of the Galena Volunteer Fire Department a few months after the death of Chief J.C. Murdock, which position he held until May 1919 when he resigned on account of ill health.

Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Mary Gerster, two sister, Mrs. Emma Wilhite Stearns of Joplin, Mrs. J.F. Dora of Carthage, two nieces, Mrs. W.H. Withrow of Joplin and Mrs. A. Lantz of Grove, Oklahoma and one nephew, O.G. Gerster of Stella, Missouri.

Mr. Gerster was a member of local A.O.U.W., the last twenty-six years, was also a member of the Masonic order and the Galena Volunteer Fire Department.

Funeral services will be held Friday afternoon at 2:30, the members of the Masonic order to be in charge, the members of the A.O.U.W. will be in attendance. The Galena Fire Department in conjunction with the fire departments of Columbus and Joplin will attend in a body.

Mr. Gerster's body will lie in state from tomorrow morning till Friday noon at their former home, 813 Chicago avenue.

GALENA, KAN., July 29.—Funeral services for Fred Gerster, ex-fire chief, who died at his home here at 12 o'clock Tuesday night, will be held at the Christian church at 2 :30 o'clock Friday afternoon, conducted by the Rev. Ray Hessig. The Masonic order will have charge of the services at the grave and members of the A. O. U. W. will attend. The Galena fire department, in conjunction with the fire departments of Joplin and Columbus, will attend in a body.
