Poet. Salomón Ibarra Mayorga was the writer of the lyrics of the Nicaraguan National Anthem. He was born the son of poet and teacher Felipe Ibarra, who had been an early influence on Nicaraguan poet and national hero Rubén Darío. In 1918, he entered a government sponsored contest to decide the lyrics for the Nicaraguan national anthem. Writing what became "Salve a ti, Nicaragua," Ibarra won the contest, however the song was only officially adopted as the national anthem by order of President Luis Somoza Debayle in 1939. Following the 1972 Nicaragua earthquake, he moved to Honduras where he lived until his death. The remains of both he and his wife were repatriated to Nicaragua in 2000 and originally placed in the Salón de los Símbolos Patrios at the Palacio Nacional de la Cultura in Managua before being moved again to Cementerio San Pedro in 2005.
