He was drafted at Smyrna, DE, on 12 Aug 1863 to serve three years. He gave his age as 21, his occupation as laborer, and his birthplace as Philadelphia, PA. He was absent "sick" beginning on 29 Apr 1864, when he was admitted to McClellan Hospital. He was transferred: to Summit House Gen Hosp on 17 Aug 1864, to Ft Monroe Gen Hosp on 21 Oct 1864, to Beverly Gen Hosp on 29 Mar 1865, and to White-Hall Gen Hosp on 12 May 1865. According to his discharge certificate, when he was admitted to White-Hall, he had suffered a gunshot wound to his right wrist and hand. He was finally discharged for disability on 27 May 1865.
