A Civil War veteran, he enlisted and mustered into federal service at Lancaster February 15, 1865, as a private with Co. G, 195th Pennsylvania Infantry, and honorably discharged with his company January 31, 1866, at Washington DC.
He married Mary Elizabeth Geist ca. 1871 and fathered William C. (b. 02/21/70), Elenora (b. @1871, d. 1873), Mary Alice (b. 08/17/73), John A. (b. 08/15/74), Samuel Geist (b. 10/02/77), Charles Geist (b. 05/01/79), and James Geist (b. 03/15/82). After the war, he was a butcher by trade and a member of Lititz's Stevens Post No. 517, G.A.R. He died at his home from "acute nephritis."
