Actor. The prolific character actor appeared in more than 100 films and television shows during a career that spanned six decades. Born Allen Goorwitz, after graduating high school in 1957, he attended The Actors Studio where he studied under Lee Strasberg. In 1968, he began acting in films with bit parts in low budget films, but soon graduated to roles in more prominent works. His early credits include 'The Owl and the Pussycat' (1970), 'Bananas' (1971), 'The Candidate' (1972) and 'The Conversation' (1974). His major breakthrough came in 1975 when he starred in Robert Altman's 'Nashville.' Among the other films he appeared in were 'One Trick Pony' (1980), 'Continental Divide' (1981), 'The Cotton Club' (1984), 'Beverly Hills Cop II' (1987), 'Dick Tracy' (1990), 'Until the End of the World' (1991) and 'The Ninth Gate' (1998). He appeared in several television series and made-for-TV movies, such as 'The Mod Squad,' 'Bonanza,' 'McCloud,' 'Love, American Style,' 'Adam's Rib,' 'Virginia Hill,' 'Serpico,' 'Taxi,' 'Matlock,' 'Chicago Hope' and 'The West Wing.' Garfield, whose last film appearance was in 2016's 'Chief Zabu,' died from complications of the coronavirus.
