Poet, Author. He will be best remembered for his writing works that focused on Communist influences including, "Forever In Armor" (1938). He was born as Grigol Grigor'evich Abashidze in Chiatura, in the Imereti Region, of Georgia. He was educated locally and began writing even before he finished his schooling. His first taste of the literary scene happened when he had his first work published in 1934. He then studied at the Faculty of Philology (the study of language in oral and written historical sources) at the prestigious Tbilisi State University in Tbilisi, Georgia, where he graduated from in 1936. He usually focused his style of writing on the everyday common Soviet man, including labourers and farmers. He also contributed to communism in his works. His reputation soared during World War II, and he joined the Communist Party of the Soviet Union (or CPSU) in 1944 and remained a lifelong member. He also became a Member of the Supreme Council of the Soviet Union. Besides, "Forever In Armor" (1938), his many other works include, "The Founder" (1939), "The Enemies" (1941), "The Duel Of The Tanks" (1941), "George The Sixth" (1942, which captures the country of Georgia's struggle for independence), "The Banners" (1943), and "The Unconquerable Caucasus" (1943). His next works, "On The Southern Frontier" (1949), and "Lenin In Samgori" (1950), won him the State Prize of the USSR in 1951. He also wrote the narrative poems, "The Legend Of The First Dwellers In Tbilisi" (1959), and "Journey Into Three Times" (1961), and two historical novels which focus on life in 13th Century Georgia, "The Long Night" (1957), and "Lasharela" (1957). He became the First Secretary of the Board of the Union Writers of Georgia in 1967. He continued to write and work until his death. Besides, the Stalin Prize, his other awards include the Order of Lenin, Hero of the Socialist Labour, Order of the October Revolution, Order of the Badge of Honour, and Order of the Red Banner of Labour. He passed away in Tbilisi, Georgia, on July 29, 1994, at the age of 79, and was buried in the Didube Cemetery (or Didube Pantheon) in Tbilisi, Georgia, where many other famous Georgian personalities including writers, actors, actresses, singers, and politicians, are laid to rest.
