Joop der Weduwen was a medical doctor in Aalten. During WW2 he was active in the resistance. Through negotiations with the German occupying forces, he managed to save many Dutch men from forced labor and some Jews from deportation. He was killed by aircraft fire on January 23, 1945 on his way to The Hague. There he wanted to negotiate better food care for the people of Aalten.
