Irving Rose was a farmer with an excellent reputation as a hunter.

He enlisted twice in the union army during the civil war. The first time he was a member of Company I of the 7th infantry regiment of the Michigan volunteers. He enlisted 6 August 1861 and received a disability discharge on 30 Nov 1861.

Irving reinlisted in the 7th Michigan Cavalry, Company H on 24 Jan 1863. He was Promoted to Full Commissary Sergeant on 7 March 1863 and was wounded in action at Gettysburg. PA. July 3, 1863. He served until 15 Dec 1865 and was mustered out a Ft. Leavenworth, Ks. Of interest was the his Brigade commander was George Armstrong Custer of the Little Bighorn fame.
