Gambian Statesman. He served as the 1st President of the Gambia from April 24, 1970 to July 22, 1994. He also served as the Prime Minister of the Gambia from June 12, 1962 to April 24, 1970. After attending Achimota College in Ghana, he trained as a veterinary surgeon at the University of Glasgow's School of Veterinary Medicine and then completed his training at the University of Liverpool. After returning to his native The Gambia, he began work as a veterinary officer. He later decided to enter the political scene and became a leader in the new People's Progressive Party (PPP). In 1960, he was elected to the House of Representatives and two years later, became the country's first prime minister. He served in this position until 1970, when the country became a republic and he was elected its first president. His presidency lasted for the next twenty-four years before he was ousted in a coup d'etat led by Yahya Jammeh in 1994. His tenure saw a coup attempt in 1981, in which soldiers from neighboring Senegal came in to help him. This led to the creation of the Senegambia Confederation, which lasted only until 1989. After his ouster, he went into exile, but returned to the Gambia in 2002.
