Olympic Games Gold Medalist Athlete. Born Michael Francis Troy, he began swimming at the age of eight and developed into an experienced competitor through the Indianapolis District Swimming Program. He later competed as a member of the Indianapolis Athletic Club Team while attending Indiana University, where he was a member of the Hoosiers Swimming Team. He earned the AAU National Championship Title in the 100 Meter Butterfly Competition and went on to the international stage with a second place finish in the 200 Meter Butterfly Competition during the 1959 Pan American Games. In 1960, Troy became a household name with his world record setting 2:19 time in the 200 Meter Butterfly Competition at the US Nationals. For this feat, he was featured on the cover of Sports Illustrated in August 1960. During the 1960 Summer Olympic Games in Rome, Troy earned a gold medal in the Men's 4x Meter Competition and received a second gold medal in the Men's 200 Meters Butterfly Competition. He concluded his collegiate studies and later enlisted with the United States Navy. Troy saw combat action during the Vietnam War and earned a Silver Star from this experience. He went on to work in the real estate industry in addition to becoming a swim coach. He was inducted into the International Swimming Hall of Fame in 1971.
