Theresa ("Tessie") Colgan drowned in a water boiler in 1888 at 2 years old. In the spring of 1888, following the drowning death of Tessie, and the publication of an article entitled "The Colgan Family's Troubles," The Times newspaper in Philadelphia collected cash several donations to support the family.
