Jean Roe Obituary - UT | The Salt Lake Tribune

Jean Brunson Roe 1916 ~ 2004 Our loving, kind, gracious, and sweet mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother passed away Sunday evening of causes incidental to her age and the ravages of Alzheimer's disease. The person who passed away was a mere shell of the wonderful person that we all knew and loved. Over the last 10 years Alzheimer's had robbed her of her personality, wit and dignity, but even in the last days of her life she was unfailingly gracious to others. Her last words spoken to us were her appreciation for a small task done for her. Jean was born December 9, 1916 in Magdalena, NM. She was the daughter of Walter T. Brunson and Nell Phillips Brunson. She met Dener Aubrey Roe in 1937 at a town picnic in Magdalena. He said he found her sitting on a rock and was the only girl at the picnic that he found interesting, but he thought she was married. He was delighted to find out the next day that she was single. They eloped and married September 9, 1939 in Belen, NM. Following World War II they settled in El Paso, TX in 1946. They lived there for 46 years. Jean was the best possible mother and homemaker. Her daughters, whether they wanted to or not, learned how to cook and keep house and play the piano, things that she considered to be essential life skills. Jean and Dener were great lovers of travel. Jean was more than a little disappointed that Dener would be retired from the Army because of his World War II injury. She loved the idea of living all over the country and maybe even the world while he served in the military. So, if they could not travel as part of his occupation, they did it as a leisure activity. At first they tent camped all over New Mexico, Arizona, and Texas. Then they graduated to travel trailers, campers and motor homes. When their grandchildren came to visit in the summer, it would not be a complete visit without a trip to Cloudcroft, NM in the RV they had at the time. After Dener retired in 1976, they traveled almost full time, adding tours and cruises all over the world. One of the cruelest blows that life dealt them was when they could no longer travel alone. By the time that they moved to Utah to be with family in 1992, they had visited all the states in the union and all of the continents except Antarctica. In the last years of her life, Jean loved our herd of mini dachsies -- all five of them. They were always the highlight of family visits. Jean is survived by a daughter, Janell Burk (Dennis), Sandy, UT; grandchildren, Bruce Cranford, Arlington, TX; Stacey Shepherd (Jeff), Denton, TX; Del Cranford, Grand Junction, CO; Layne Cranford; Kelly Cranford, San Angelo, TX; Christopher Burk (Missy), Murray, UT; and Neil Burk, Salt Lake City, UT; eight great-grandchildren. Jean was preceded in death by her husband, Dener Aubrey Roe in 2001, and her daughter Mary Anne Cranford in 1983. The family wishes to thank the staff of Highland Cove Health Care for their many kindnesses to Jean and her family. Graveside services will be Thursday, May 20, 2004, 11:00 a.m. at Utah Veterans Memorial Park, 17111 S. Camp Williams Road (1700 West).
