Actor. Born in Tbilisi, Georgia, he graduated from the prestigious Shota Rustaveli Institute of Theater and Performing Arts in 1985. His first part in a film was a leading role in "The Step" (1985), which was directed by Aleksandre Rekhviashvili. His second success came in another leading role, playing Nikusha Chachanidze in "The Journey of A Young Composer" in 1985. The film which is set in 1907 tell's the story of a young composer who travels to Georgian villages to collect folk songs but he is eventually mistaken by a companion as a revolutionary conspirator while his map illustrating the villages is mistaken as an insurrection plan. The film was entered into the 36th Berlin International Film Festival and the director Georgiy Shengelaya was awarded the Silver Bear for Best Director in 1986. Abashidze's other films include, "Skapenis oinebi" (1985), "Guest" (1987), "Anemia" (1987), "Oromtriali" (1987), "Roots" (1987), Pesvebi" (1987), and "Bediani" (1992). His last film "Bravo, Giordano, Bravo" (1993), was released following his death. In 1992, war broke out in the Abkhazia Region of Western Georgia and Abashidze decided to volunteer and fight. On September 7, 1992, during the separatist offensive on the capital of Sukhumi, he was killed while defending the Gumista river entrenchment of the Georgian forces. His death caused mass hysteria in the film and theater studios across the country of Georgia. He was named a People's Artists of Georgia.
