Ethiopian Statesman. He served as the President of Ethiopia from August 22, 1995 to October 8, 2001. Born Negasso Gidada Solon, he held a doctorate in social history from the Goethe University in Frankfurt-am-Main , Germany and was later a part-time lecturer of history at Addis Ababa University in Ethiopia. While in Europe, he was a member of the Oromo Liberation Front, a rebel group which fought the Marxist government of Ethiopia from the 1970s to early 1990s. He became minister of information in the transitional government which took power after the fall of Mengistu Haile Mariam in 1991. In 1995, he became president of Ethiopia and served in this position for six years before leaving office in 2001. Four years later, he was elected to Ethiopia's House of People's Representatives from Dembidolo and served in this legislative body until his passing.
