Phil was born in Ft. Collins, Colorado to George and Mollie Klein. He was the second born of six children:

Phil attended elementary (Plummer School) ,junior high school and High School in Ft. Collins. When in high school he rode a bike 10 miles a day to school. He graduated from Cache Le Poudre High School, and was the sole support of his mother and four siblings that remained at home from age 17 until he joined the Air Force in 1945.
Phil served in the Army Air Force in the south Pacific and during his three year stint in the military, he saved the lives of two of his Air Force companions. For this act of heroism he was awarded the "Soldiers Medal" of honor. He also was awarded a raise in pay and an early discharge.
In May 1948 he met and fell in love with Irene Todd, of Ft. Collins. They were married on 10-10-1948 and had two daughters. Cheryl, born in 1952, and Lory, born in 1955.
Phil went to work for Safeway in 1941 and served as assistant manager or manager of stores starting in Ft. Collins and continuing in many other Colorado cities, including Boulder, Loveland, Greeley, Idaho Springs and Arvada. He, Irene and the girls moved to Arvada in 1958. On one occasion,while working, Phil was robbed at gunpoint at his Safeway store. In his later years with Safeway, he left the Arvada store to serve on the store stocking management team. He traveled to six different states and set up and stocked new stores.
Phil enjoyed ice skating, biking, swimming, jogging, and playing tennis. He was also a member if the Kiwanis and the Calvary Temple Church.
Phil often said one of the best adventures he had was when he and his wife,Irene,chaperoned his daughter,Lory,and her school band on a six week tour of Europe where they visited five countries.
Phil was a loving and devoted husband and father and is greatly missed by everyone that knew him.
