METROPOLIS, ILL. - Vernon L. Steele, 75, of 219 E. 14th St., died at 5:30 p.m. Thursday at Western Baptist Hospital in Paducah.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Sunday at First United Methodist Church in Metropolis, where he was a member. The Rev. Bob Smith will officiate. Burial will be in Massac Memorial Gardens.

Mr. Steele was an employee of the U.S. Postal Service in Metropolis for 49 years, serving as post master for five years before retiring in 1985.

Surviving are his wife, Helen Steele; a sister, Mary Harris of Paducah; a brother, James Steele of Metropolis, and several nieces and nephews.

Three brothers and one sister preceded him in death. His parents were John H. and Josephine Lynn Steele.

Friends may call at Miller Funeral Home after 6 p.m. today, and at the church after noon Sunday.

Expressions of sympathy may take the form of contributions to First United Methodist Church or the Otto Diller Rehabilitation Unit of Lourdes Hospital.
