Dempsy Jones, 73, of Blake Branch, Sylva, died Wednesday, May 3, 2006, at his residence after a period of declining health.

Services were held at 2 p.m. Sunday, May 7, in the chapel of Melton-Riddle Funeral Home with the Revs. Dennis Burrell, Sherrill Ammons and Jim Cogdill officiating. Burial was in Fairview Memorial Gardens with military rites conducted by the U.S. Navy and William E. Dillard American Legion Post 104.

Pallbearers were Luke Jones, Spencer Jones, Toby Jones, Bruce Jones, Cameron Jones and Tim Jones.

Honorary pallbearer was Mark Jones.

A native and lifelong resident of Jackson County, he was retired from Allison's as a certified mechanic. He was a U.S. Navy veteran, having served in the Korean War, an avid outdoorsman and a member of Calvary Baptist Church. He was a son of Maudie Belle Wikle Jones of Sylva and the late Aude Jones.

Surviving in addition to his mother are his wife of 50 years, LaVerne Woods Jones; one son, Rick Jones of Sylva; six brothers, Billy Ray Jones, Harry Lee Jones and Randall Keith Jones, all of Sylva, Kenneth Jones of Atlanta, Ga., Leon Jones of Thomasville and Danny Jones of Asheville; three grandchildren; and one great-granddaughter.
