DISCREPANCIES RE SURNAME: Clinton Co cemetery database (2017) lists John as "Seger, John, " "B. 1845, Bur. Sec 1 Lot 16 grave 2, Civil War Army Veteran," but the same database lists his wife's surname as "Sager" and mentions John as "John Sager" in her listing. On his record at the National Home for Disabled Soldiers, he's listed as "Sagar," and on the order card for his government tombstone, he's similarly listed as "Sagar." In the 1890 Federal Census, he's listed as "Sagur."

DISCREPANCIES RE DATE AND PLACE OF BIRTH: The Clinton Co cemetery database says he was born 1845, and the 1870 Federal Census says he was born in Bavaria (Germany); the 1880 Federal Census says he was age 60 in 1880 (therefore born abt 1820) and born In France. The Roster of the 4th Ohio Cavalry lists John "Seger" as age 19 when he enlisted in 1864, which would suggest a date of birth of 1845, consistent with the date in the Clinton Co cemetery database.

DISCREPANCY RE PLACE OF BURIAL: Clinton Co cemetery database says he is buried at Mount Pleasant (which probably means a grave marker is found there), but the tombstone order card says he was to be buried in the cemetery at the Soldiers Home near Dayton. John's record from the National Home for Disabled Soldiers said he was to be buried in Wilmington, so Mount Pleasant Cemetery must be correct.?

Age 60 [Inexplicably, this is 25 years too old. And the birthplace of "France" is inexplicable, because he was born in Bavaria on the other side of Germany from France. Were it not for the wife's name (Catherine) and family members named "Bermingham"/Birmingham (Catherine's children by her previous marriage), this would look like an entry for a different John Seger/Sagar.]
