She was the daughter of Lewis DeMoss (1803-1856) and Amanda Catherine Tumlinson (1809-1854). Laura married Wyatt Hanks (1835-1863) on 25 February 1857 in Texas; Wyatt died during the Civil War. Laura later married James W. Cox on 22 August 1872 in Texas, but that marriage would last less than a year; as Cox was murdered by outlaws in mid 1873. Almost forty years later, Laura married Frederick Brookreson. Her children:

1. Hanah Olivia Hanks (1857-1929)
2. Orlando Camilla Hanks (1860-1902)
3. Wyatt Hanks, Jr. (1863-1924)
4. James W. Cox (1873-1942)
