Chief, or Maga’låhi, Chelef, was a leader from the village of Orote, during the 26-year period of Spanish-Chamorro wars, from 1668 to 1695.

Maga’låhi Chelef helped to sabotage and dislodge the invaders and overcome their more powerful weapons.

In 1676, Chelef lured some Spanish soldiers into his boat. When in deeper waters, he rocked and overturned the boat. Chelef swam away to safety, defeating the Spaniards.

He was on the radar of the Spanish governor for two years, until he was captured at Malesso (Merizo) in 1678. He was executed immediately by Spanish captain, Don Juan Antonio de Salas.

Biographical sketch of Maga’låhi Chelef excerpted from “I Manmañaina-ta: I Manmaga’lahi yan I Manma’gas–Geran Chamoru yan Espanot, 1668-1695” by Eddie L.G. Benavente, on pages 22, 23, and 70.
