For eleven seasons (1960 to 1970), he played at the halfback, fullback and tight end positions in the American and National Football Leagues with the Houston Oilers, Oakland Raiders and Kansas City Chiefs. Born William Abb Cannon, he made his initial mark on the football field during his years at Istrouma High School in Louisiana. He enrolled at Louisiana State University and while with the Fighting Tigers, he was a key member of the 1958 team which produced a perfect season and a share of the National Championship. The two-time All-American was recognized for his combination of speed and strength and excelled in track and field, as well as at the running back and punter positions with the football squad. In 1959, he earned Sporting News Player of the Year and that same year (1959), his uniform number 20 was retired by Louisiana State University. Selected by the Los Angeles Rams as the number one overall pick during the 1960 NFL Draft, he ended up with the Houston Oilers of the newly-formed American Football League. He experienced two consecutive AFL Championships (1960 and 1961) with Houston and individually led the league with 948 rushing yards in 1961. After he was acquired by Oakland, he contributed to the Raiders' capturing of the AFL Title in 1967, which culminated with an appearance in Super Bowl II (1968). During the course of his career, he achieved both All-Pro and All Star honors twice. Following his retirement from football, he received his medical degree and becoming a dentist. During the 1980s, he served a 2 and a half year prison sentence for his involvement in a counterfeiting scheme and went on to become a dentist at the Louisiana State Penitentiary. He was inducted into the LSU Athletic Hall of Fame in 1975 and the following year (1976), he was enshrined in the Louisiana Sports Hall of Fame.
