Don lived for more than 50 years with his dear wife Virginia (Billie) in the Reading area.
He was a devoted and active member of Holy Cross United Methodist Church and received much joy by dedicating his time to the people of Reading and Berks County.
You might have found him delivering Meals on Wheels or picking up furniture for the Salvation Army. He worked behind and even in front of the camera at Berks Cable TV. Don could be seen judging the work of budding scientists at the Reading/Berks Science Fair for 30 years and making executive decisions on Reading YMCA Board for 45 years. In addition, he served as Berks County Senior Citizens Council President during the planning, fund raising, construction and dedication of the Senior Center at Ninth and Court Streets.
Don was born in West New York, New Jersey to Jay and Neldred (Stern), and had a brother, Lawrence, and sister-in-law, Irma, who all predeceased him.
After serving in the military during WWII and Korea, he graduated cum laude from George Washington University with a BS in Mechanical Engineering.
His career in Reading included jobs at Beryllium Corp., Polymer Corp., and Bender & Shoemaker, Inc.
In 2014, Donald moved to Albany County to be near his son, Jon, daughter-in-law, Joan, and grandson, Jeffrey. He has a granddaughter, Dr. Jennifer Ollendorf, who lives near Buffalo, NY.
