Icephena was the daughter of William Gray and Alice Melinda Hargrave, and the granddaughter of Benjamin Gray and Nancy Cox, Hezekiah Hargrave and Susannah Ann McMurty.

She became the wife of Joseph A Carter, the son of William Carter and Susannah Adams. They were married 07 Mar 1850 in Warrick County and had one son, William Joshua Carter 1851-1917.

Secondly, she married John Obediah Carter, the son of Thomas Carter and Sarah Lorana Baker, and had the following children:

* Lorena Alice Carter b 1857
* Lincoln Baker Carter 1860-1936
* Harvey Prentis Carter 1862-1935
