Cartoonist. He was the creator of the 'Beetle Bailey' comic strip. Born in El Dorado, Kansas, his father was an architect, he showed a flair for drawing during his childhood and by his early teens, he was selling cartoons to magazines. During World War II, he served with the United States Army as an intelligence and investigating officer, in addition to being in charge of a German POW camp in Italy. Following his return home, he enrolled at the University of Missouri and served as editor of the school's magazine. After graduating, he moved to New York to pursue a career as an artist and landed jobs with a number of publications. In 1950, his strip 'Beetle Bailey' was accepted by King Features for syndication. Four years later, 'Hi and Lois' (a spinoff of 'Beetle Bailey') came to print . Eventually, his strips became regular fixtures in 1,800 newspapers, in 50 countries, reaching 200 million people. Additionally, Walker penned numerous books. He died of complications from pneumonia.
