Speight Langston was the oldest child and only son of Daniel Langston and Polly Ann Edmondson and was born in Wayne County, North Carolina in 1876 or 1877. Speight's death certificate lists his birth year as 1877, so there is a discrepancy between the birth date on his death certificate and the tombstone. It appears that the death certificate initially had 1876 for the birth year and that the 6 was marked out for a 7.

It is said that he had a reputation for being a rather rough and mean person, but he supposedly spent a large sum of his personal wealth on getting the best treatment for his first wife Mollie and sending her to a hospital in Maryland to try and cure her of what is believed to have been cancer. Ultimately, Mollie still succumbed to her illness.

Over the course of nearly fifty years, he was the father of at least 17 children who lived to adulthood. His first child was born in 1898, 12 years before his second wife Eva was born, and Speight's last child was born a little more than two months after he had already died. Speight was 22 when his first child was born and would have been 70 when his last child was born. Three of his children are still alive today.

Speight may have fathered as many as 25 children between his two wives based on the number of infant markers in the cemetery. His second wife who was more than thirty years younger than him was an Eva Jones (1910-1997), who later married a Harrell.
