Marriage - Florence Elizabeth Westlake on 6 August 1945

It is with deep sadness that we announce the peaceful passing of John Jeffery Raney, age 92, on April 30, 2012 at the Strait Richmond Hospital. Born April 27, 1920 in Point Michaud, N.S., he was the son of the late Michael & Agnes Raney.

A veteran of the Second World War, he served as a gunner with the Royal Canadian Artillery. Following his military service, he returned to Cape Breton to a life as a lobster fisherman and carpenter for 50 years. Upon retirement, he enjoyed his time at the links at Dundee with his golfing buddies, playing cards, perfecting his computer skills and supervising the wharf at L'Archeveque. He was an avid community member, serving on many committees and clubs including The Royal Canadian Legion, Br 110, L'Ardoise Men's Club, and the Jolly Club.

He was predeceased by his loving wife, Florence (Westlake); brothers, Michael and Richard; sisters, Catherine and Agnes (Matheson) and son-in-law, Paul Cullen. He is survived by his son, Gary and daughter-in-law, Donalda (MacKay), Grand River, N.S.; his daughters, Darlene, Dartmouth, N.S., Sheila and son-in-law, Robert (Harding), Dartmouth, N.S. and Heather, Ottawa, Ont.; his grandchildren, Angela (Dave McNeil), Fredericton, N.B., Cheryl (Berkley Reid), Halifax, N.S. and Robin (Steve Larade), Cheticamp, N.S., his great-grandchildren, Callie (McNeil) and Michael John (Larade); his sisters, Mary (Mackay), St. Peter's, Martha (Gracie), Point Michaud and Betty (Dube), Kitchener-Waterloo, Ont.; his brother, Joe, New Glasgow, N.S. and many nieces, nephews, cousins & friends.

Visitation will take place on Wednesday, May 2, 2012 from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. at Holy Guardian Angels Parish Funeral Home, L'Ardoise. Funeral service will follow on Thursday, May 3, 2012 at 2 p.m. at Holy Guardian Angels Church, L'Ardoise, with Fr. Mariadoss Lourdusamy officiating. Interment will be in the parish cemetery. Donations can be made in his name to the Canadian Cancer Society, Strait Richmond Palliative Care Society Hospital or a charity of your choice.

The family would like to thank the staff of the Strait Richmond Hospital for their love and compassionate care given to Johnny over the past few months. A very special thanks to his niece, Peggy MacNeil for her loving care and support throughout his illness. Funeral arrangements will be under the direction of Green's Funeral Home, Port Hawkesbury, N.S.
