After graduating from cosmetology school in Chicago, Illinois, she returned to Burlington to work in her aunt's hair salon. She went to build her own successful hair salon with Flossie Bateman. Many of her clients became close friends.
She was an active member of First Christian United Church of Christ where she served on numerous boards and committees. Also, she was active in the community where she enjoyed golf and being a member of the Ladies Golf Association.
