The family lived in Calhoun County until the 1910's. By 1918, they moved to Grafton, Jersey County, Illinois. Robert took a job there as a laborer for the Rippley Boat Company. After that, he worked as a laborer for a lumber mill. He then worked odd jobs until his retirement.
Mattie died in 1960.
As his health declined, Robert became a resident at Watson Nursing Home. He died there in 1965 at the age of 90 years, 7 months and 30 days.
He was survived by 3 daughters, Edna Compton of Grafton, Margaret Hoppe of Edwardsville, Illinois, and Lillian Farlow of Brownsville, Texas; 1 son, Master Sergeant Curtis Besaw, stationed in Shilling, Kansas with the United States Air Force; 30 grandchildren; 40 great-grandchildren; and 3 brothers, Charles Besaw of Jerseyville, John Besaw of Godfrey, Illinois, and Alvie Besaw of Nevada, Missouri.
In addition to his wife, Robert was preceded in death by his mother and father; 3 daughters, Ruby Cope and 2 infant girls; and 4 sons, Ernest Besaw, Carl Besaw and 2 infant boys.
Visitation was held at Jacoby Brothers Funeral Home. Funeral services were conducted there at 1:30 p.m. on the afternoon of 12 Feb 1965.
He was buried in an unmarked grave at Scenic Hill Cemetery.
