The son of Woodwell Francis "Woods" Besaw and Lucy Marie Josephine Bushnell, John married Golda L. "Goldie" Schumacker on 14 Feb 1921 in Emmetsburg, Palo Alto, Iowa.

They were the parents of 4 children. The family lived in Godfrey, Madison County, Illinois by 1930. He eventually worked there as a painter.

The Besaws then lived near Brighton, Illinois, and he worked there as a farmer. A farm accident caused him the loss of a leg and put an end to his farming career.

Goldie passed away in 1948.

Children from first marriage: 4 sons.

John moved back to Godfrey around 1950. He then married Virgie Eckels on 27 Jun 1951 in East Alton, Illinois. She was the mother of 2 daughters from a prior marriage.

John worked as a watchman at Monticello College for 3 years and then returned to painting. He retired in 1962.

He was in failing health for the final 3 years of his life.

Children from second marriage: 2 step-daughters.

John died at Alton Memorial Hospital 9 hours after he was admitted. His death came 3 days after his 75th birthday.

He was survived by wife, Virgie; 4 sons, Victor Besaw of Chicago, Illinois, Harold Besaw of Roodhouse, Illinois, Raymond Besaw of Los Angeles, California, and Earl Besaw of Sacramento, California; 2 step-daughters, [Mrs. Everett] Tuetken of Jerseyville, Illinois, and Mary Lou Griffith of Chattanooga, Tennessee; 11 grandchildren; 9 step-grandchildren; and 2 brothers, Charles Besaw of Jerseyville, and Alvie Besaw of Nevada, Missouri.

In addition to his first wife, John was preceded in death by his mother and father; 3 brothers; and 1 sister.

Visitation was held at Gent Chapel on 15 Oct 1965. Funeral services were conducted there at 1 p.m. the following afternoon.
