Walter Maples, 88, of Bristol, Tennessee, passed away on June 23, 2017, at the Johnson City Medical Center in Johnson City, Tennessee.

Born June 6, 1929, in London, Kentucky, he was a son of the late Walter Maples, Sr. and Hazel Stringer Maples.
In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his first wife, and the mother of his children, Bobby Rae Caudill Maples; his sons, Carl Maples and Robert Maples; and a sister, Lula Belle McKenney.

Walter entered the United States Army on June 12, 1946. His military career evolved over the next 30 years. Walter served stateside during the Korean Conflict and he served in the Democratic Republic of Vietnam from August of 1966 to August of 1967. He earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Sociology from the University of Nebraska in 1972. Walter retired as a Chief Warrant Officer in July of 1976. His distinguished military career had taken him around the world. Following retirement, he worked for the United States Civil Service Commission until his retirement in April of 1994.

Walter later married the love of his life, Phyllis Lequire Maples, a Pike County native. They settled in Bristol, Tennessee. Walter and Phyllis enjoyed a happy and loving marriage. They enjoyed traveling together and spending time with their family. Phyllis' children, Carol and Shawn, loved Walter as if he were their father, and Walter loved them as if they were his own children.

Walter's favorite pastimes interest included travel, photography and woodwork.

He had been a member of the Slate Lick Baptist Church since May of 1946.

In addition to his wife, Phyllis, Walter is survived by his step-children, Carol (Brian) Lowe of Honey Hills, Florida, and Shawn (Tonya) Cool of Chattaroy, West Virginia; a sister, Louise Waldroff, Hamilton, Ohio; a brother-in-law, Thomas McKenney; a step-granddaughter, Tiffany Lowe, Miyakonjo, Japan; grandchildren, S. Edward, Katrine, and Jessica Maples. Other survivors include Steve Waldroff, Michael Waldroff, Kim Milam and Karlisa Burleson.

Walter will be sorely missed by everyone who knew and loved him. He will be remembered with deep and abiding affection.

Funeral services were held at 2:00 pm, Wednesday, June 28, 2017, at Weaver Mortuary. Pastor Jimmy Stanley officiated.

Interment in the Arlington National Cemetery, Arlington, Virginia.
