Edward Dunn Funeral to be Held Thursday
Veteran of Civil War, 84 Years Old, Served in War Department for 40 Years
Died at the Soldier's Home yesterday after a long illness.
Mr Dunn was kidnapped by gypsies when a child and lived with them until found and adopted by a clergyman of Wheeling, W Va some years later. After living for some years in Ohio, he enlisted in the Union army inn February 1862. He was in the second battle of Manasses and for three months in LIbbey Prison as a prisoner of war.
Following the Civil War, he was appointed personal messenger for Secretary Stanton, serving each successive Secretary of War in the same capacity until his appointment to a clerkship in the War Department in 1882. In August 1922, Mr Dunn was retired from the Department, being awarded a purse of gold as recognition of his 40 years of service.
Surviving him are three sons, William Dunn, Walter L and M C Dunn and a daughter, Mrs Francis Peififfer of Washington, as well as nine grandchildren and five great grandchildren.
