US Marine Walter James Reece, Vietnam Veteran, Native of Marshall, North Carolina.

US Marine Sergeant Walter James Reece was a casualty of the Vietnam War. As a member of the Marine Corps, SGT Reece served our country until May 19th, 1968 in Quang Tri, South Vietnam. He was 23 years old and was not married. It was reported that Walter died from an undetermined explosion. His body was recovered. Walter was born on April 7th, 1945 in Marshall, North Carolina. SGT Reece is on panel 63E, line 017 of the Vietnam Memorial Wall in Washington D.C. He served our country for 2 years.

Walter was born to Burnett and Alice Reece 4/6/1945. He spent his life prior to his service duty, in the Walnut Creek area of Madison County, NC. He joined the USMC in 1965. He completed training at Parris Island SC, Camp LeJeune, NC and Camp Pendleton California. He spent one year in Iceland and then was sent to Vietnam in the summer of 1967.

He was killed there on May 19,1968. He was in charge of his Company the day he was killed. Three of his fellow Marines had been injured and in going to their rescue he lost his life. He was a kind and loving son, brother, uncle and Marine. When we received word of his death it devastated his family, his church and the whole community. I know of no one who honored the commandment to "Honor thy Father and Mother" more than he did.To quote one of his commanding officers in a letter we received after his death. "Walter was loyal to his country and to God".

Your brothers of Second Battalion, First Marines honor your service and your supreme sacrifice. You are one of our Heroes. Your comrades of 2/1 hold you in their hearts and minds forever. Take your warrior's rest for a duty well done. Semper Fi, Marine! Vietnam Veterans of Second Battalion, First Marines.
