Olympic Games Gold Medalist Athlete. A track and field athlete, he was a member of the 1936 German Olympic team, and won the Gold Medal in the Hammer Throw at the Summer Games held in Berlin, Germany. As a youth, he competed in the hammer throw, discus, and decathlon, but retired after his marriage in the early 1930s. However, a documentary film on the 1932 Los Angeles Olympic games ignited his interest, and he restarted his career in 1934. He won the 1936 Olympic gold medal in the hammer throw with an Olympic Record throw of 56.49 meters and then the European Championship in 1938 with a throw of 58.77 meters. He also won German championships in 1936, 1937, 1938, 1946, and 1947 and competed into his 60s, finishing second in the German championships in 1956 at the age of 48 and throwing 53 meters at the age of 65.
