Born in Mars Hill to the late Clingman Carter and Ella Shelton Carter Carpenter, he worked in textiles as a garment cutter, was a member of Northside Baptist Church, and loved to sing in the church choir and play the guitar.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a daughter, Lisette Queen; two sisters, Rebecca Carter and Alda Shope; and his wife, Beona Carter.
He is survived by a son, three grandchildren, and three great-grandchildren.
