Auto Racing Pioneer. He was a NASCAR pioneer who was one of the series' most successful drivers. He started out as a race car owner and then entered the field of stock car racing as a driver in the mid 1940s. In June 1949, he entered his first NASCAR race at the Charlotte Speedway with his 1947 Hudson Hornet followed by a 12th place finish at the first Daytona Beach race. From 1949 to 1962, he was in 228 NASCAR races placing in the top 5 122 times, top 10 156 times and won first place 48 times. He is a member of the National Motorsports Press Association's Hall of Fame, International Motorsports Hall of Fame and NASCAR Hall of Fame.
