1ST SGT US MARINE CORPS, KOREA, VIETNAM

FIRST SERGEANT WILLIAM REID HOWLES, 75, of Memphis and Counce, Tennessee, retired from the United States Marine Corps, passed away Thursday, May 25, 2006 at Baptist Memorial Hospital-Memphis. As a 30-year career Marine, he served his country in 20 tours of duty, most notably, Korea, Vietnam, Japan, Okinawa, Spain, France, Italy, Portugal, Morocco, Lebanon, Turkey and Greece. He also served his country as a Marine recruiter. After retirement he served with the Pearl Harbor Police Department in Hawaii and the Hardin County, Tennessee Sheriff's Department. First Sgt. Howles leaves his wife, Joni Michelle Parker Howles of Counce; two children, Sharon (Bill) Holloway of N. Little Rock, Arkansas, and Jerry (Judy) Howles of Forrest City, Arkansas; a brother, Joe W. (Bettye) Howles of Cordova; four sisters, Wilma (Carl) Jones of West Memphis, Kay (Bill) Shamblin of Cleveland, Tennessee, Jane (Joe) Hooker of Cordova and Mary (Carl) Mosley of West Chester, Pennsylvania, three grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife, Lois Nicks Howles; a daughter, Pamela Kay Howles and an infant son. He was the eldest son of the late William A. and Ruth Reid Howles. Services will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday, May 30 at West Tennessee Veterans Cemetery, 4000 Forrest Hill-Irene Road in Memphis. Navy Chaplain, Furniss Harkness, minister of Bethany Christian Church in Eads will conduct the service with military honors. 1st. Sgt. Howles was a Baptist by faith.
