Stuman Craig was the son of Benjamin and Nancy (Stuman) Craig. He was born on 4 May 1787. His name is Stuman on his marker however it has also been seen on records as Turemen and Sturman.

Stuman was from a very prominent family in the area. His grandfather, Toliver Craig, was the father of Revs. Lewis, Elijah, and Joseph Craig. These being the well known preachers who were imprisoned in Virginia for preaching against the doctrines of the Church of England. Rev. Lewis Craig was defended by Patrick Henry. This persecution for their beliefs resulted in the emigration of their congregation, about 600 people, to Kentucky. Toliver, and the rest of his family were among them. This emigration was known as The Traveling Church.

Stuman's father, Benjamin Craig, was one of the founders of Port William (now Carrollton), who helped lay out that town. He has a historical marker at his gravesite on highway 42 just outside of Carrollton, Kentucky.

When he was 22 years old Stuman married 18-year-old Elizabeth Easterday, daughter of Lewis and Susanna (Martin) Easterday, Sr.. They were wed on 26 October 26 1809 in Gallatin County, Kentucky.

Both Stuman and Elisabeth were listed as members of the Whites Run Baptist Church in 1812. In November of 1819 both were "dismissed by letter" from the Whites Run Church. This means they joined another church at this time.

They lived on a farm in Gallatin County, being listed on the 1820 census in New Liberty.

During their almost 12 years of marriage Stuman and Elizabeth had 4 children:

  • Joseph Craig - (1813 - 1882) aged 69
  • Elisabeth (Craig) Hicks - (1815 - 1849) aged 34
  • Lewis Easterday Craig - (1819 - 1867) aged 47
  • Nancy Craig - (1821 - 1836) aged 14

Elizabeth died on 23 August 1821 in Gallatin County, Kentucky at the age of 29, leaving Stuman a widower with 4 small children, the youngest only 4 months old.

Less than seven months after the death of Elizabeth, Stuman married Elizabeth's 17 year old sister, Phebe Easterday, on 14 March 1822 in Gallatin County. This was not uncommon at the time especially when there were young children.

Stuman and Phebe were married 6 years before the birth of their only child.

  • Susan Craig - (1828 - 1879) aged 51.

Phoebe died on 7 May 1828, 12 days after the birth of Susan, in Gallatin County.

Stuman died 9 June 1830, 2 years after Phoebe. He is buried, next to Elizabeth and Phebe in the Easterday cemetery near Easterday, Carroll County, Kentucky.
