Pfc. Jack Sage Ohio 329 Inf. 83 Div, WW- II Killed in action in Normandy. France
On July 4,1944 is Word 1st.County Man Killed In France.

The first Sidney-Shelby County man to make the supreme sacrifice in this battle for the Normandy peninsula in France-was reported today by the war department Jack Sage, who was killed in action on the fourth of July. His Parent Mr. and Mrs. George Sage 332 Wilson Ave. Sidney were notified by Adjutant General J. A. Ulio in a telegram. It Reads:
"The secretary of War desires me to express his deep regret that your son, Private First Class Jack L. Sage was killed in action on the fourth of July in France. Letter follows.

The young soldier, who would be 19 years old Thursday, wrote his family that he was a Sniper in the Infantry during invasion and post-invasion operations in France. They received six letters from him since his arrival on that embattled soil.

That last dated June 30 was a v-mail. He spoke of how nice he thought France was he explained that he was writing the letter from a Slit-Trench."Boy"this Shit-Trench is crowded he said, but it is a lot safer than on the ground!"
Although PFC. Sage was the first to give his life for his county since D-Day in France,
two local airmen have been reported missing over that area- S/Sgt Richard Lee Bell since June 12 and Lt. Homer R. Kuck, since June 18. Announcement of PFC. Sage's Death doings the total number of Shelby County casualties in World War II to 38 killed, missing and prisoners of War. He is the 14th local serviceman to die in action.

Pfc. Sage has been in the service since September 6,1943.He received his training at Camp Van Dorn, Mississippi, and Camp Breckenridge, Ky., before embarking for overseas services in April of this years. He visited his family on a furlough last February.

He was the only son, and the eldest Child of George and Leona (Given) Sage He was Born July 27, 1925, In Addition to his parent, he is mourned by two sisters, Mrs Donald (Joan) Hoover, Whose Husband.S2/c Donald in on Active duty with the Navy in the south Pacific, and who resides at home And Mrs. Robert Jeannie Hughes of Second Ave.

In his letters he inquired after his two little nephews one
born on June 8, and the other eight day after he was reported killed. His grandfather is Fred Given, of Michigan Street. He Attended Sidney Public and Sidney High School.
He was employed at the Monarch Machine Tool Company for a time as a Candy Boy on the night shift. Later he went to Piqua where he worked at The Lear-Avia Corpitalion.
