R James Stuart, artist works in an ole barn for the past 25 years near a branch of the North Western railroad in the Black hills branch. He often came to this area of Minnesota with his wife to visit her relatives living in the area and fell in love with the country. In 1933 they decided to stay instead of returning to their home in Chicago. Prior to that he studied art at the Chicago Art institute, and in New York, Los Angeles, and Cincinnati.
During WWII he turned his barn studio into an apartment with scraps of wood, after other living quarters were lost. At the writing of the article he worked on portraits, calendar pictures and magazine covers, selling reproduction rights through New York and Chicago outlets. He draws from what images he has in his head and never uses models. He has sketched out abstract pictures but detests that type of art and “may never finish them”. He keeps his studio closed, but friends do drop by for visits.

He explained his name preference of R James Stuart. He has never liked his first name of Raymond so has used Ray, or Jim when living in the big cities.
His wife Lauretta Julia “Laura” Jackson died in 1956 and has lived alone since then. There were no children in the marriage. (per a different article he professed to hating children,) Occasionally he does travel.
Additionally, he was married prior to marriage with Laura. At the time of this writing it is not confirmed as to who it was. Although there is a Missouri marriage certificate of him and a Julia Lynch and following that marriage a 1910 Federal census in Los Angeles California with them listed and his occupation is doing real estate signs. There is a newspaper article of him eloping with Lauretta Julia “Laura” Jackson in 1917. They were arrested by Denver Police because he was still married and took Laura across state lines and was going to be prosecuted under the Mann act. Both were sent back to Chicago. About a year later when Laura was 18, they were married in New Jersey. No other articles have been located related to the charges or the divorce actions of first wife.
