They were arrested by Denver Police because he was still married and took Laura across state lines and was going to be prosecuted under the Mann act. Both were sent back to Chicago. About a year later when Laura was 18, they were married in New Jersey. No other articles have been located related to the charges or of his divorce from first wife.

Funeral Rites Held Monday for Mrs. R Stuart
Private funeral rites were held at 2 p.m. Monday at the Conley Funeral chapel, Owatonna, for Mrs. Lauretta Stuart, wife of R James Stuart, well known artist of Meriden.
Mrs. Stuart died at 12:30 a.m. Friday at Methodist hospital in Rochester from a tumor of the throat. She had been in the hospital only a few days.
Officiating at the services was the Rev. William L Robertson pastor of the Associated Church in Owatonna. Burial was in Brase cemetery, two miles south of Meriden. (now known as Meriden Township Cemetery)
Born Lauretta Julia Jackson on March 18, 1900, Mrs. Stuart was the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Samuel H Jackson of Chicago. She graduated from Lane high school in Chicago and worked for a time there and in New York.
There she met her husband and they were married Aug 1, 1918, In Jersey City, N J. The couple moved to Meriden in November of 1933
Surviving besides her husband are a brother William, Chicago, who attended the funeral with his wife, and a sister, Lillian, also of Chicago.

Chief Armstrong Decides to Turn Couple Over to Chicago Police.
DENVER. Oct. 17, Lauretta Jackson, 17-year-old daughter of a prominent Chicago pharmacist, and R. J. Stuart, 35 a commercial artist, who, it is said, deserted his wife to elope with the girl, were arrested by Detectives Mulligan and Sanders in an apartment at No. 311 Twenty-third Street, where they have been living as man and wife since their arrival m Denver six weeks ago. A charge of white slavery was preferred against Stuart, with the Intention of prosecuting him in Denver under the provisions of the Mann act, but, after communicating with the Chicago authorities. Chief Armstrong decided to turn the couple over to the Chicago authorities.
