On November 3rd 1923, Clark Howell, Jr. married Miss Margaret Louise Carr, a daughter of Julian Shakespeare Carr and the former Miss Margaret Louise Cannon of Durham, North Carolina. Margaret's maternal grandfather, James Cannon, founded Cannon Mills, the world's largest textile company at the time.
Clark Howell, Jr. served as an officer in both World War I and World War II. He joined the staff of The Constitution as a reporter in 1919 and became the newspaper's publisher and president in 1936, serving in that capacity until 1960. He was appointed to the State Board of Regents in 1934 and became a member of the Associated Press Board of Directors in 1937.
