Joseph Sawyer, was an acting ensign United States Navy, on duty on the U.S.S. Tawah, at Johnsonville, TN, on 4th November, 1864, when said vessel was burned in order to prevent her falling into the hands of the Southern rebels. Claimant alleges lost of his personal property the sum of $380 in lawful money, together with clothing and other personal property to the amount of $326.80.

Joseph joined the US Lifesaving Service and drowned in the line of duty in Lake Huron Oct. 20, 1880.
