"Above all else, believe in yourself, face your goals, and fight as if your life depended on it." - TD, Sr.

WARREN-Thomas Duma, Sr., 96, passed away Monday, April 18, 2016.

Husband, father, grandfather and entrepreneur, he was born Aug. 15,1919, to Christina Albu Duma.

Nearly a century went by for one of Warren's earliest opportunists. He started in a broken home with little more than the clothes on his back and a chip on his shoulder. He sold papers while most kids went off to primary school. He fought for every advantage and carved his way as a pioneer who helped cultivate the early community. He carried himself with a certain poise and confidence, meeting challenges head on and with a smile.

Shaped by experience, ambition and hard work, Thomas went from humble beginnings to a local legend in the end.

John 10:10 speaks to life and life abundantly - Mo, as he was lovingly referred, would undeniably personify those words.

Thom served his country during World War II as a flight control specialist in Mississippi. After the war, he found himself settling in at watch making school, where he learned the ways of the jewelry industry. He proved himself behind the bench at Sach's Jewelers of Warren while fixing watches and addressing repairs. It was just a short time, however, before the sales floor needed help and came calling. He found he had a natural affinity for selling. He loved the challenge and approached it with a mix of optimism and competition. So indeed, it's no surprise that in 1958, when he bought Klivan's Jewelers, he would live on to own and operate the classic store on the square for the next 30 years. His career transitioned into the latest era as he remained a presence in the family store, even up to his final days as Emeritus and namesake of Thom Duma Fine Jewelers.

Before the war and the jewelry, Thom was an accomplished amateur boxer in the U.S. Golden Gloves competition. He was an affluent fisherman and loved to golf. He taught himself how to play with left-handed clubs and even tallied a hole-in-one along the way. Northfield Park found him content to watch the horse races and boast as proud owner of the winning mare "Here Comes Tommy O."

Thomas Duma, Sr. will be remembered fondly.

He is survived by his daughter, Donna J. Maxin of Warren; his son, Thomas O. (Jacki) Duma of Warren; and five grandchildren; Erin Maxin, Shannon (Jason) Perkowski, Cody, Cory and Gabriella Duma.

Thomas was preceded in death by his wife of 35 years, Helen Susanne Negulic Duma; a brother, Nick Bogden; and three sisters; Mary Opris, Vida Webb and Ann Bush.

Honoring Thom's wishes, the family held a private celebration to commemorate his life's journey, spirit and legacy.

Arrangements for Mr. Duma were handled by the Carl W. Hall Funeral Home, 533 North Park Ave., Warren.
